Event description

Description

This is an industrial heritage walk stressing the importance of Pendle Water and the Leeds and Liverpool in the development of the textile industry in Pendle.

Leaving Pendle Heritage Centre, we cross Colne Rd. and follow the riverside path to Higherford. Buildings of interest: Park Hill, The George and Dragon, the Toll House, Syke House, the old Wesleyan School, weavers' cottages and Higherford Mill. Crossing Gisburn Rd. we pass through the pinfold and onto the Tudor pack-horse bridge. Very old cottages on Foreside. Turn right on foreside and follow the river path towards the Watermeetings. We pass the remains of the weir and sluice for Higherford Mill. Through the gate is the black and white cottage, formerly the Barrowford Tennis Club and on the left is the ancient Grimshaw Oak, thought to be 6-700years old. Continuing on the path we come to Watermeetings Cottage (former tea room) Turning right we follow the track up to Blacko. Across Gisburn Rd. we join the footpath to Higher Stonedge Farm. We take the field path to the Cross Gates Inn. Over Barnoldswick Old Rd. we join the old pack-horse track to Wanless via a stile. At Wanless canal bridge turn left to join the towpath. On the right is an old lime kiln and on the far side of the canal is what was 'The Grinning Rat', a hostelry for 'navvies' during repair work on the tunnel. Follow the tow path to view the entry to Foulridge tunnel. Return to Wanless bridge. Here is a 'wide' used by boatmen for turning the boats after loading and unloading at the Former Wanless Wharf. (Mentioned in Robert Neille's book 'Song of Sunrise' as a cotton wharf.) Continue along the tow path to Barrowford Locks. Keep on the tow path and then go up the ramp to Colne Rd. Cross the road to join the footpath right and follow this down to the Heritage Centre.
