Event description

Description

Walk in the footsteps of the Sabden Chartists who met on a spur of Pendle Hill in the 1840s. This walk climbs gently via Churn Clough Reservoir to reach the site of the Chartists' Well on Apronful Hill. There will be historical readings along the way.The walk is led by volunteers from the Pendle Radicals Project, organised by Mid Pennine Arts, part of the Pendle Hill Landscape Partnership Scheme.

This history walk celebrates the 1840s Chartist meetings on Pendle Hill organised by the Sabden branch of this political movement campaigning to give working class people the right to vote. The walk follows in the footsteps of the villagers who walked up to the ridge on Apronful Hill from the village and it identifies the site where the meetings took place around the Chartists' Well. The walk will take a gentle approach on to the ridge via Churn Clough Reservoir and after a visit to the Chartists' Well and the site of the old hustings where the meeting took place we will return downhill via Badger Well Water and Heyhouses. Some rough tracks will be followed on Pendle Hill which may be boggy after wet weather. The first half of the walk is a a largely gentle climb with some short steep sections. There are toilets in the White Hart pub in Sabden village for patrons at the end of the walk. We will be be stopping for 10-15 minutes at the site of the Chartists' meeting to explain the history and read some contemporary accounts.
