Ghost hunting at Penrhyn Old Hall.
Penrhyn old hall has a history that dates back to the 14th Century, if not possibly further.
Plas Penrhyn as it was known in the 16th century was a predominantly stone Tudor Mansion which is thought to have been built on the site of a royal palace which itself was built in the 8th Century. During the 16th Century, Penrhyn Old Hall was owned by the Pugh family who were sympathisers of Catholicism when Protestantism was the law of the land and sole permitted religion.
The family sheltered a Catholic priest in the fireplace in a priest hole within the Hall. Robert Pugh and a local Catholic priest, William Davies fled for their lives to the Little Orme in Llandudno after being discovered and it was while they were hiding in a cave that they smuggled in a printing press and published Wales’ first book. They managed to evade capture when their hideaway was discovered in 1587 but were later arrested in 1592 in Holyhead. Robert Pugh escaped but William Davies was convicted of being a Catholic priest and hung, drawn and quartered in Beaumaris. Much later a withered hand which is thought to have been cut from William Davies’ body was found in a hidden case in Penrhyn Old Hall.
