Description

'Pension Debate’ is a series of events that have evolved over time to discuss the more technical aspects of retirement planning. Starting in Peterborough back in 2017, we are now on our fourth meet-up. In 2018, we met in Port Talbot to, generally, high critical acclaim (read what Hannah Godfrey said here, and what Elliot Smith said, here) and this year, we’re going back and I’d be delighted if you could take part. Whilst the location might be the same, this time, it has something different. It has an edge!

Day One – Pension Transfer Hackathon

Up to twenty teams of between five and six, comprised of experts from the world of financial planning, retirement, financial media, behaviourism, regulation, legislation, fund management and more, will spend the day together to solve a single particular retirement planning problem. You'll play a crucial role in the success of your team, so make sure you bring your 'A' game, and don’t forget to tell us if you can't make it! This problem will unfold on stage before your eyes throughout the course of the day, using actors to bring the whole thing to life.

To transfer or not to transfer?

With the use of these actors, and a notable IFA playing the role of a gentle interrogator, each team will have use of software to arrive at their unique solution to this particular retirement conundrum, based around a general quandary of ‘to transfer or not to transfer?’. A financial planner will play the role of ‘team lead’, and his or her role will be to elicit, shepherd and coordinate a collective view in order to arrive at a solution (which they will later have the option of offering for wider public scrutiny).

Day Two – D(ebate) Day!

On day two, up to five teams will be given the opportunity to present their solutions for live peer review. Basically, it’s going to be your advice, so are you prepared to stand or fall by it? You will then discuss the various problems and the matters arising from day one and decide which solution presents the most imaginative, elegant, technically robust and meritorious solution. There will be two awards, sponsored by Parmenion, for ‘Best Team’ and ‘Event Personality'.

The event will be live streamed throughout the day, a la Treasure Hunt.

The event presents the chance for up to 200 luminaries from the world of retirement to meet, and stripping away social niceties, get to grips quickly with a complex and fast moving challenge. The end of Day One then sees the teams retire for a famous Franco’s beach barbecue and the chance to unwind, network and indulge in some serious karaoke.

Please note - event content and detail subject to change.

FAQs

Are there special requirements to enter the event?

Financial professionals only, this event is not open to retail clients. *Please only use your professional email address to apply with*. Due to the assumed level of delegate understanding and a subsequent absence of risk warnings, it is not an event for the general public.

What happens if I can't make it?

The "team based" nature of the event means you are critical to the success of your team and the event as a whole, so if you register and then subsequently can't make it, please give us as much notice as possible so we can reorganise the teams. We had 30 no-shows at Pension Debate III.

What accomodation options are available?

There is a special rate at the Aberavon Beach hotel for attendees of the conference, a limited number of rooms are available on the night of Wednesday 10 July and full availability on the night of Thursday 11 July.

In addition, Booking.com is just one online resource which shows details of nearby hotels.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The venue has bags of free parking on site, you can find details of the location and transport options on the hotel website here.
