People Like Me - Engaging girls with STEM careers
STEM Sussex are pleased to invite female STEM Ambassadors, and teachers from local schools, to a free training event of the inspiring resource 'People Like Me'.
People Like Me is a revolutionary, quiz-based approach to engaging girls with careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). People Like Me uses the natural tendency of girls to articulate their self-identity using adjectives, to show them that people like them are happy and successful working in careers in STEM. The approach was developed based on the ‘Not for People like Me’ research led and authored by WISE board member Professor Averil MacDonald and sponsored by Network Rail.
When we ran this recently at a school in Horsham, comments from the students included:
"The personality quiz was brilliant"
"[I enjoyed] finding out about my qualities and what jobs I could do with them"
"Inspired me as a student to really think about what my future could hold - opened my eyes!"
This training will enable Teachers and STEM Ambassadors to more effectively target girls with messages about STEM subjects and careers, using language and approach designed to engage young women aged 11-14, and show the students that if they continue with at least one STEM subject post-16 they are likely to have better prospects and more career choice.
This event is being kindly hosted by Atkins, with places available free to local Secondary school teachers and registered, approved STEM Ambassadors.
As places are limited and the session is popular we would ask STEM Ambassadors attending to commit to run the session in a local school in the few months following the training (either at a 'new' school, or with one of the teachers attending). We also hope to be able to link teachers with local women working in industry who can visit the school to co-run the activity with you, and show pupils that careers in STEM are for people like them!
Further details will be emailed to attendees a couple of weeks before the session, but if you have any queries about this session please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
