Event description

Description

At St Nicholas, we will tell the stories of the men and women who left a legacy of art for the whole people of Sutton. The stories will cover the windows lost in second world war and the still existing windows in this wonderful building.

There has been a church on the site of St Nicholas since before the Norman Conquest. The current building dates from 1864 but the monuments from the old church were moved into the new building and then further enhanced by gifts of carving, metalwork and stained glass windows. They allow us to tell the story of the individuals that have left the people of Sutton with such a rich artistic legacy.

Our exhibition will cover the windows lost in the second world war and explain the still existing windows in this Grade II* listed building. We will draw on the work of local historians, contributions from students from local Colleges and members of the local community.

There will be self-guided tours, talks, storytelling and activity trails for children that will take in the monuments of the church and the many grade II listed tombs of the churchyard.
