What is it about?

As part of the People Power Passion programme, artist Andy Abbott is creating a VR video game called Lutopia.

All the content in the game is developed through workshops with people in and around Luton. The workshops are based around a series of questions about what Luton could be like in the future.

The workshops use drawing, creative writing, dramatic role play, 360 video and VR technology. The material produced in the workshop then becomes part of the Lutopia game which will be played live on the Town Hall as part of the People Power Passion finale on October 12th.

What happens?

The workshops will last 90 minutes and are based around a series of activities imagining life in Lutopia: a future version of Luton where everyone is able to be an active citizen.

In the first part Andy introduces the project, talks previous collaborative work that has used Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies, and offers people a chance to play a demo version of the game on VR headsets.

In the second part participants use worksheets to create their character/player for the game (creative writing/drawing); collectively design a space/setting (group discussion), and play out a scenario together.

The role play is then performed to 360 video camera to create a VR document of the session, although this element is optional!

Who is it for?

The workshop is designed for groups of between 4 and 16 people. Andy is particularly interested in gathering contributions from individuals and groups who feel they have something to say but are often left out of conversations about their future. This may be because they face barriers and challenges around age, money, race, gender, ability, citizen status, and so on. But if you’ve got something to say about the future of Luton and the role you could play in shaping it then the workshop is for you!

Where and when?

The workshops will take place at Tokko Youth Space on Thursday August 22nd there are 3 different time slots available and booking is required. Participation is FREE and all resources will be provided.

To play a text-based demo version of the game and have a go at an online version of the workshop go to www.lutopia.co.uk
