Join us for the bi-monthly Giants Academy meet-up.
This month our theme is:
"People Power - winning hearts & minds to
put you ahead of your competition"
With Phil Gillard - former MD of SolutionsPT
(Sunday Times Top 100 Best Small Companies 6 years running)
Getting the best out of your people. It’s an age-old challenge, experienced by the great generals of centuries gone-by to the captains of industry today.
So, with all those years of collective wisdom and experience, why is it still such a challenge now?
In the modern workplace - just as it was for generals many years ago - the key to great results, to getting people to go well beyond what they often believe they’re capable of, is to win hearts and minds. In modern business parlance, it’s all about “engagement” and there’s evidence out there to prove it.
Gallup have found that organisations with highly-engaged employees have nearly four times the earnings-per-share growth of those with low engagement in the same sector. AON Hewitt also found that businesses with high levels of engagement outperform the stock market, posting shareholder returns 22% above average. In contrast, low-engagement businesses had returns some 28% below average.
Phil Gillard gets this. For six years he lead the Industrial IT solutions and services business SolutionsPT. For six years, SolutionsPT featured in the Sunday Times’ Top 100 Best Small Companies to Work For. This is no coincidence. Phil deliberately challenged the business to achieve this. He saw it as a basis for attracting the best people and then making sure they were happy and productive at SolutionsPT.
Phil will be sharing the insights he gained from his time at SolutionsPT and how he believes businesses may be missing a huge trick when it comes to using their people to drive competitive advantage
Background on Phil
Phil Gillard started his career in industry immediately after gaining his degree in Control Engineering, his first position was working for a recently acquired subsidiary of Petrofina working on research into alternative energy sources following the energy crisis of the 1970’s - what goes around, comes around!
The next thirty years of his career saw him working for a range of global organisations, medium size UK based companies and a Paris based start up taking responsibility for global account management, development for acquisition and growth to reduce market and / or supplier risk.
During the time, he found that employee engagement and people development to be the most rewarding parts of his work and he has now decided to fully concentrate on this activity by taking on an Master level course in teaching and learning and re-training to become a specialist Maths teacher.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There's a lot of parking within walking distance, but please bear in mind that it is a city-centre venue and traffic into the city may be heavy. NCP Car park options can be found here: http://goo.gl/IkCeY5
Market Street and St Peter's Square Metrolink stations are both less than 10 minutes walk away.
What time should I arrive?
We're open for arrivals and informal networking from 5:30pm and the event starts shortly after 6:00pm
Will I have to do anything?
Our events are usually in two parts. An interview with a regular business person, who will share some of the things they've learnt along the way, covering both successes and those less-than-succesful times we all have. Roger and Nick will then lead a short, interactive session to explore some of that learning about what makes businesses work in a slightly deeper way. It's relaxed and informal and no expertise or skills are required other than a genuine interest in helping your own business to be giant!
Will there be refreshments?
We'll have soft drinks and small nibbles available at the start and during break.
Can we carry on chatting in the pub afterwards?
Yes! There's no shortage of great beer houses near by which are great places to continue the discussion or have a drink together.
