About this event

Friday September 5th is Pepys Day when we will be celebrating the great diarist Samuel Pepys in Wren's Temple Bar with a candlelit dinner and 17th century menu (parmesan cheese for desert).

Attending the dinner will be former Lord Mayor of the City of London Michael Mainelli, the instigator of Pepys Day. Michael drew inspiration from the model of Bloomsday in Dublin (an annual celebration on 16 June in homage to James Joyce's Ulysses) and wondered why London lacked something similar.

Mainelli chose Pepys because his vivid, first‑hand diary remains one of the most powerful records of London’s history.

Paul Finch will read selected passages from the diaries during the dinner.
