Building on the success of our 2015 and 2016 meetings, for the third year running we are holding a free national conference for all clinicians interested or involved in perioperative safety and clinical governance on Thursday May 11, 2017. The day will be at the Royal London Hospital, and we hope you will be able to join us.

Clinical governance is in the spotlight as never before, offering both opportunities and challenges. Building on more than a decade of patient safety work, the Francis and Berwick reports set an expectation for significant improvements in the way NHS institutions make sure they learn from incidents and avoid preventable harm

Most recently, the Morecombe Bay inquiry and the Public Administration Select Committee's inquiry into NHS complaints have both highlighted local variation in incident investigations and the responses to them. The duties of candour for professionals and institutions carry with them new obligations, and commissioning bodies are developing metrics that aim to characterise institutions by their safety performance.

Healthcare providers are responding to these challenges, but need to collaborate to be effective.

With this in mind, we extend an invitation to all those with an interest in perioperative safety who have projects and experience to share: clinical leads, safety champions, members of the multidisciplinary team and interested clinicians.

The aim of the day is to share current practice and discuss challenges, and to establish a network to share ideas in the future. Those attending should bring with them an outline of the way their organisation approaches perioperative safety, including the way their clinical governance works, any safety improvement plans, and learning from initiatives, interventions and projects.

Getting to the Royal London Hospital: The venue is easily accessible from central London stations by bus and both underground and overground trains.
