Event description

Description

While I love to think of myself as a Wonder Woman type Superhero, I know that as girls and women, we are generally physically weaker and shorter than our male counterparts, the type of violence and threat we face can be quite different to those of men. According to the Metropolitan Police, in my local area of Surrey/South West London, reported rape cases have tripled in some areas while every other crime has decreased over the past seven years.

Nearby Croydon town centre, which has one of the highest crime rates in London, the monthly rate of reported sexual offences has increased dramatically by 192%, while in leafy and affluent Richmond it has gone up by a startling 236%.

Overall, the number of reported rapes in 2010/2011 was 693 in south west London, doubling to 1,385 in 2016/2017.

This heavily contrasts the rest of crime in south west London which has decreased on average by 7%, with significant decreases in burglary, criminal damage and drugs, while the number of reported rape cases climbs year on year.

While I am not one for scare tactics, these shocking figures are exactly the reason we are holding this event. Now more than ever we need to be aware of the danger signs and minimise the risk of attack. With further statistics showing that 50% of women will be subject to an attack or sexual assault in their lifetime, please don't wait until it's too late.

I believe the saying ‘your life flashes before your eyes’ is actually our brain desperately searching for a point of reference of when we have experienced that event before; it’s searching for a solution. So, our life doesn’t flash before our eyes, but our previous experiences and knowledge does. It can be impossible to find a solution if we have never been in that situation previously or at least seen something that vaguely relates to it.

In this 3-hour workshop we will put the balance back in your favour by making you aware of the possible dangers and showing you how to overcome them. It’s more than just knowing how to fight or escape a physical attack; you will also learn to think in terms of dangers, options and choices, allowing you to remain calmer and stay in control.

Who is this suitable for?

This workshop is suitable for all women, young and old from 15 to 80. Everyone’s personal physical circumstances will be considered and you will not be asked to do anything that will cause you harm.
