Event description
Led by textile artist Marilyn Willis, use a photograph from the past and any pieces of family memorabilia, vintage jewellery, buttons, lace.

About this Event

Led by textile artist Marilyn Willis, this class will use a photograph from the past and any pieces of family memorabilia, also vintage jewellery, buttons and lace. These fragments from a bygone era will be incorporated into your work to evoke a personal memory. Marilyn will help you with a colour scheme to create a fabric collage, using hand stitching that could include words or torn pieces from old letters. If a photograph is used it will need to be sent beforehand so it can be scanned and printed onto fabric. Some materials will be provided but please bring some of your own collection.

Marilyn has worked worked in Fashion and Textiles for many years, both as a designer and lecturer. Her MA in Design and Material Culture focused on a 'Housewife's hidden skills in hand knitting and embroidery during the 1930s'. Then the technical skills required by women to master complex stitch patterns and garment shaping was considered a normal domestic duty, along with cooking and cleaning; Marilyn’s research showed through oral testimony, the importance of these skills being handed down from mother to daughter, through the generations.

Her love of the craft of knitting and sewing combined with pre-loved or worn fabrics has led to current work reviving hand embroidery, vintage fabrics and lace combined with personal memorabilia to create unique hand stitched collages - www.marilynscreativethreads.com
