About this event
Do not let anyone tell you that the Perth has no historic buildings left. It’s simply not true!
In his talk, ‘Perth’s Oldest Buildings’, local historian and best-selling author Richard Offen will discuss the buildings still extant in Perth from the first 30 years after British colonisation, telling the story of their birth and people behind their creation. From the city’s oldest piece of brick wall, to such treasures such as the Old Court House and St John’s Pro-Cathedral, Richard will chart the development of Perth from its foundation in 1829.
After 15 years in education, Richard Offen spent 14 years on the staff of the UK National Trust. He immigrated to Perth in 2005 to become the inaugural director of Heritage Perth, a post he held until retiring in 2017. During that time he became a very popular speaker and broadcaster, promoting the history and heritage of Western Australia. In semi-retirement, Richard now spends his time as a heritage consultant and author, having written for Pavilion Books ‘Perth Then and Now’ and ‘Lost Perth’, which are both on the Australian ‘best seller’ list.
