Event description

Description

Join Ailsa Quirie from the University of Aberdeen, as she presents her recent research into the ‘phantom volcanoes’ of the North Sea.

The Rattray Volcanic Province in the Central North Sea was previously thought to be sourced from the eruptions of three central volcanoes during the Jurassic period, however, Ailsa’s research has shown this is not the case. Her study has shown that the style of volcanism was actually very different, and therefore a large amount of underexplored gross rock volume is present beneath the volcanics. This could open up opportunities for the exploration of subvolcanic reservoirs and source rocks in a previously overlooked area.

Join the PESGB YPs in hearing about this ground-breaking research from Ailsa which has led to a new geological understanding of the area.

This event is free to attend for all PESGB members.
