In 2007 I decided to retrace the jorney of IPA from Burton to Calcutta, to see if it really did change the character of the beer. It was the expereince of a lifetime: exploding casks, close brushes with pirates, having guns pointed at me by Iranian guards when I was in the country illegally, and so much more. At the same time, I retrace the history of IPA in unprecedented detail, and explore the wider context: why were the British in India in the first place? Who drank IPA?
Since then, IPA has become the most popular craft beer style on the planet, and morphed into new forms the British in India would not recognise.
In this event, I'll be talking about the book, showing photos from my journey, and discussing an aspect of the book the audience are interested in talkng about. We'll also be drinking some IPAs!
EXCLUSIVE BEER OFFER!
IPA is the most popular - and most argued over - beer style in craft beer. It was never invented as such - it evolved from strong beers meant for keeping, and it has continued to evolve ever since. To coincide with my Book Club event on Hops & Glory, I've worked with www.BestofBritishBeer.co.uk to put together a selection of six different British beers, all called IPA, all quite different from each other, each excellent in its own way.
