Description

Your rights at work

The National Education Union(NEU) is the largest for education workers in the UK. The NEU was formed on 01 January 2019 and has already made its mark campaigning for improved school funding, to reduce teacher workload and against excessive testing of school pupils. Much of this has been achieved in alliance with parents and the community.

The union acknowledges the effort of past generations who have struggled and sacrificed to make public education available and free to all and for trade union rights. The democratic right to join a union, assemble and act in defence of living standards, including the withdrawal of one’s labour, has been carved through centuries of struggle. It is still a hotly contested achievement.

Peterloo is a landmark event in defence of democratic rights and the NEU is proud to be associated with the bicentennial celebration in Manchester.

This year also marks the centenary of the formation of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), which sets labour standards across the world. The ILO is also in the forefront of monitoring and enforcing standards in a world where ‘work’ is changing rapidly and profoundly.

As a contribution to the Peterloo Festival, on Thursday 15 August at the Mechanics Institute, the NEU will sponsor training events for members and those in the community, who want to find out how to organise a union and secure their rights at work.

We will follow the training with an open discussion meeting to mark the significance of Peterloo and celebrate the contribution of the ILO to the establishment of rights for working people.
