Event description
2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre: join us for Mike Leigh's film, dramatising this major event in our social history

About this Event

Manchester, 1819. The Napoleonic wars are over, famine, unemployment and the first Corn Law are decimating the poor. The people want a vote, but the authorities fear revolution...

Peterloo was a defining moment in British history. On August 16th 1819 an estimated crowd of 60,000–80,000 people had gathered in St Peter's Field (close to the Quaker meeting house) to peacefully demand the reform of parliamentary representation. Local magistrates called on the Manchester and Salford Yeomanry, and the 15th Hussars, to disperse the protesters and arrest the main speaker - Henry Hunt - and others on the hustings. The troops charged with sabres drawn, and in the ensuing confusion 15 people, including a child, were killed and 400–700 were injured.

As part of our Festival, we are proud to invite you to this FREE screening of 'Peterloo' written and directed by eminent Salfordian Mike Leigh. In this gritty and emotional portrayal, the lives (and deaths) of real human beings are played out against momentous events.
