PETRAS research collab. opportunity:Law,Economics &Public Value at the Edge
Event Information
About this Event
The PETRAS National Centre of Excellence for IoT Systems Cybersecurity recently launched its 2nd Strategic Research Fund (SRF) Call for Proposals. Through this call, the Centre is making funds available of up to £4.5M to eligible UK higher education institutions (HEI’s) to support new collaborative research projects. Project leads will be expected to collaborate and co-create a research agenda with at least one, new or existing, partner in the public and/or private sectors.
For this call, PETRAS is hosting three online events to provide a networking opportunity for HEI's and industry to connect. These are themed on our cross-cutting lenses:
- Securing the Connected Edge (22 July)
- Useful and Useable Decentralisation (30 July)
- Law, Economics, and Public Value at the Edge (5 August)
Webinar for industry and academics
These webinars aim to connect academics and industry to promote and encourage innovative collaboration and co-creation for the ‘Intent to Bid’ stage of the SRF application process (deadline 9th September).
Through interactive sessions, we aim to provide high-level introductions between fields of research and challenges faced by industry. This will enable open discussions to explore possible areas of interest between prominent researchers, companies and organisations to find innovative solutions to challenges stemming from the cyber-physical and socio-technical nature of cybersecurity, IoT systems and the Edge.
To maximise engagement please ensure you read the call documents prior to attendance.
Open discussion and involvement in research collaborations are proven to provide many benefits to industry and institutional partners, including work and insights on how to de-risk the early stage development of cutting-edge technologies for commercial application, as well as supporting and developing innovation.
Webinar participants should consult the list of Frequently Asked Questions and read the detailed guidance note prior to attending this call.
-- This event focuses on ‘Law, Economics, and Public Value at the Edge’ BUT for this final webinar, we will also more broadly cover all lens themes --
Business and governance models for IoT systems, particularly those undertaking decentralised analytics, are still emerging.
Connected IoT devices provide many avenues for public good, including increased understanding of the world to support policy interventions; new innovative goods and services; and information to help safeguard individuals. Many of these benefits will come from the combination of IoT with AI. New challenges are expected in processing the data at the Edge in ways that preserve privacy, security and trust yet yield the same benefits.
Innovative research aims to bring solutions to questions like these:
- What new marketplaces, financing mechanisms and business models might create value generation?
- Emerging business models and IoT systems with analytic components are likely to touch upon a wide array of legal and governance provisions, such as data protection law, competition law, liability and platform regulation. How will these regimes cope with such systems? What are the major tensions they highlight or changes they would require to succeed?
- How can we defend against new threats such as poisoning of sensor data or exploiting the vulnerabilities of AI?
- How do privacy– and security–preserving approaches affect other tasks such as anomaly detection, or repurposing data for entirely novel applications?
An example of a previous project under this lens: An example of a previous project under this lens: Newcastle University and Creative Space Management codesigned a shared space data management platform for the project MaCs (Markets for Connected Space Sharing). You can see more examples of collaboration in the PETRAS Stream Report.
