This PGR Professional Development Programme has been designed by a team of academics to discuss collaboration and career development. The purpose is to share their expertise and experience in these areas in order to help you develop skills and become a professional in the academic world.


From Postgraduate Researcher to Early Career Researcher

Weds 14 June at 16:00 – 17:00 in R1/12

Dr Shaun McDaid & Dr Leonie Jackson will explores the opportunities and challenges facing researchers making the journey from postgraduate scholar to early career researcher. Drawing on their own (relatively) recent post-PhD experiences, they will share their advice concerning what helped (and did not help) them start their independent research careers. They also welcome your questions. The session will be reflective, and PGRs will be asked to consider their current and post-PhD objectives. The goal of the workshop is to enable attendees to start thinking about and planning for the transition from research student, to jobseeker, to early career researcher.

Writing with Academics

Weds 21 June at 16:00 – 17:00 in HW2/33

Prof Surya Monro & Dr Grainne McMahon will discuss will provide an overview of the various ways in which colleagues who are doing PHDs can collaborate with their supervisors in order to produce academic publications. Issues concerning co-authorship will be addressed. Various key writing skills will also be outlined. The session will involve a mixture of didatic and interactive activities. Colleagues will be invited to provide each other with peer support in exploring how to use the tools provided in the session.


Planning an Academic Career

Weds 28 June at 16:00 – 17:00 in R1/12

What does life hold after completing a PhD? The market for jobs in both academia and other sectors is competitive. This will encourage a strategic approach to your job search and look at ways to stand out from the crowd. Dr Andy Mycock will discuss This session will discuss how you can develop a strategy to ensure a successful transition from PhD to build your career as an academic researcher. It will also explore alternative career paths. The PhD is increasingly opening doors to a whole range of opportunities, particularly if you develop the rounded experience, knowledge and skills required by employers.
