Event description
This online course aims to introduce participants to the Phase 1 habitat survey method and some of the common habitats found in the UK.

About this Event

The course is aimed at beginners and will provide attendees with a basic knowledge of how to carry out a Phase 1 habitat survey and how to use the handbook to classify different habitats. Attendees will be introduced to the most common terrestrial habitats and their key indicator plant species.

Course Tutor: The course will be led by Lindsay Mackinlay MSc. MCIEEM, Principal Ecologist, Parnassus Ecology. Lindsay is a self-employed ecological consultant with over 30 years experience working as an ecologist, including with Scottish Natural Heritage and the National Trust for Scotland. He has extensive field experience carrying out Phase 1 and other vegetation surveys as well as leading training courses aimed at students, volunteers and fellow ecologists.

Morning Session: 2 hour session with Q&A & comfort break:10.00 -12.30hrs: The morning session will introduce participants to the Phase 1 habitat survey approach, including an introduction to the handbook, survey uses, survey preparation and a look at some examples of habitats so that participants can get used to using the book and understanding its habitat descriptions. This session will end with a short informal test of plant names to be carried out between sessions, in readiness for the afternoon session.

Afternoon Session: 2 hour session with Q&A & comfort break 1400-1630hrs: The afternoon session will involve a closer look at the most common terrestrial Phase 1 habitats and key indicator species that help in their identification, using detailed photos and discussion. This session will also touch upon the relationship of Phase 1 habitats with other classification systems e.g. NVC (National Vegetation Classification), Groundwater Dependent Terrestrial Ecosystems (GWDTE), EUNIS, UKHab.

Cost: £25 (inc vat) plus Eventbrite booking fees
