Join in the discussion with independent thinktank Private School Policy Reform and national campaign Labour Against Private Schools

About this Event

With the debate kicking off about private schools across the country, two groups would like to invite you to an evening of discussion on this important and complex issue.

The first, Private School Policy Reform (PSPR – a non-party affiliated thinktank), will talk long-term policy options and formally launch its first report.

The second, Labour Against Private Schools (LAPS – a campaign group within the Labour Party), will give an update on its political campaign and how it's being received in the halls of power.

6.30pm – Welcome from chair: John Morgan, District Secretary, Manchester Branch, NEU

6.35pm – Launch of Private School Policy Reform (PSPR) by two of its co-founders, Jess Staufenberg and Melissa Benn

6.40pm – Launch of PSPR report on Reform Options for Britain's Private Schools by economist Francis Green and journalist Robert Verkaik

6.50pm – Presenting a case for phasing out private schools: Diane Reay, professor of education at Cambridge University

7.00pm – Presenting cases for keeping private schools: John Claughton, former Chief Master of King Edward's School in Birmingham; Sue Hincks, president of the Girls' Schools Association and headmistress of Bolton School Girls' Division; and Philip Britton, headmaster of Bolton School Boys' Division

7.20pm – Questions & Answers from the floor

7.45pm - The Need for LAPS: Kate Green MP (Stretford & Urmston)

7.50pm - Introduction to Labour Against Private Schools: Cllr Steven Longden, Trafford Council

8pm – Labour & State Schools: Thelma Walker MP (Colne Valley)

8.10pm – The Local Impact of Private Schools: Cllr Eve Holt, Manchester Labour councillor for Chorlton

8.20pm - Questions & Answers from the floor

8.45pm – Closing Remarks: John Morgan
