Event description
In this small group, virtual workshop you will learn how to conduct and organise your PhD literature review. Expert led and interactive.

About this event

Designed for PhD students in any discipline this virtual, small-group workshop will teach you in clear, easy to follow terms how to undertake a literature review for a PhD thesis. Everything is explained in straightforward terms. The literature review may seem a daunting task, particularly if you are doing it for the first time and even if you aren’t, doing a PhD literature review is very different from the one you may have done for your undergraduate or Masters dissertation. At first, doing a literature review may seem a daunting task; this event will remove the mystery from the process and show you how to do it in a step-by-step way.

We will consider:

• the purpose of a literature review

• the stages involved in undertaking a literature review

• how to structure your review

• what makes a “good” review

• what the examiners are looking for in a literature review

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to undertake your literature review, identify appropriate literature for your topic, ensure that it is conducted and written to a doctoral level, and write it in a structure suitable for a PhD thesis.

The host

Your host for the workshop will be Professor Peter Smith. Peter Smith is an Emeritus Professor from University of Sunderland, UK. He received his BSc (Honours) in 1978 and his PhD in 1981. Since then, he has held several teaching, research and management positions. He has helped hundreds of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including many PhD students, do their literature review across a range of different subjects. He is a very experienced PhD supervisor, having successfully supervised over 60 PhD students. Peter is a Fellow of the British Computer Society, the Royal Society of Arts, the Chartered Management Institute, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Chartered Engineer. He is now semi-retired and spends his time writing and supporting PhD students online. He enjoys working with PhD students and supporting them through their doctoral journey towards successful completion.
