An evening of music with the amazing singer/songwriters Philippa Hanna and Unoma Okudo with a look at the work of Compassion UK, rescuing children in poverty worldwide.
Philippa Hanna is an acclaimed British singer-songwriter, based in Sheffield, UK. Recorded in Nashville, her new album 'Speed Of Light' tackles the challenges of life head-on, offering listeners a message of hope in the face of adversity.
Since her 2007 debut, Philippa has released several studio albums, an EP and a live DVD, and published two autobiographical books. As one of the most sought-after acoustic performers in the UK, she has opened tours for acts including Lionel Richie, Anastacia, Leona Lewis, Wet Wet Wet and Collabro.
Born into a musical family, Philippa knew from an early age that that making music was all she wanted to do. Her music frequently draws upon her experiences of a turbulent youth, and the Christian faith she found in 2004. She aims to offer a positive message for fans: Songs like I Am Amazing and Raggedy Doll have seen Philippa champion self-esteem in young people, and she also works as an advocate for children's charity Compassion International.
Fans of Philippa can support her music, her mission and her new chapter Stateside through the innovative Rocket Fuel platform, for which she acted as a flagship artist: Pick up music, merchandise, handicrafts and more at rocketfuelhq.com/philippahanna .
Unoma Okudo is a soulful singer-songwriter distinguished by her unique voice, and captivating melodies and lyrics. Born in Nigeria, where she was introduced to music by her parents, her career really began after she moved to Glasgow, Scotland to further her education. Here, she began to write songs and to discover her own voice as an artist. She also provided backing vocals to other artists and continued singing at church, as she had done from childhood.
Since then, Unoma has performed as the opening act for established and well-known artists including Grammy award winner Macy Gray and soul legend Alexander O’Neal. In 2014, she provided backing vocals to music icons Dougie Maclean, Kylie Minogue, among others, for the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
In January 2016, Unoma released her first single “Satisfied”, a jazz and soul-infused love song. The song was picked up by BBC Radio Scotland and was made the “Single of the Week” on the popular Janice Forsyth Show. Her hotly anticipated first EP, Odyssey, is now out on digital release.
Compassion is one of the world's leading child development and child advocacy organisations.
Our approach is a personal one. Working with the local church, we link a child living in poverty with a loving sponsor. Each sponsor gives their child access to education, health checks and the care of a local church-based Compassion project. There's no quick fix to global poverty, but through our programmes, children's lives are being changed. We're impacting families, communities and whole nations.
We're passionate about giving children the opportunity to escape from poverty and live life to the full! In partnership with local churches across the world, we meet children's complete needs within the context of their local communities.
CHILD SURVIVAL PROGRAMME
Rescuing, nurturing and discipling little ones.
We reach the most vulnerable children even before they have been born.
We provide antenatal care for vulnerable mothers, ensure children are vaccinated against deadly diseases and give mothers the skills they need to earn a living. In partnership with local churches, we give children the very best possible start in life.
