Description

The Library Pot Philosophy Club welcomes you to its first discussion down in the dungeon!!

Are people too certain about things, or not certain enough? This evening, we shall ask when it is OK to be certain. In the first 20 minutes, Richard will introduce the topic and put out some ideas. Then we shall move into discussion. Here is a bit more about the topic:

When someone is certain, we are suspicious. If they tell us the economy will definitely grow by 2 per cent next year, we agree that it might, but remind them that economists are often mistaken. If they tell us that some theory of physics is certainly correct, we remind them that people said the same about Newton's theories before Einstein came along. So can we ever be certain?

Three philosophers have ideas we shall consider. Karl Popper warns us off certainty by reminding us that new evidence to change our minds could always come along tomorrow. Willlard Quine tells us not to think in terms of pinning down any particular bit of knowledge, but to accept that all of our knowledge forms one big wobbly web of beliefs, so that evidence against one belief could turn out to disturb others too - even the belief that 2 + 2 = 4. Only Ludwig Wittgenstein offers us some hope. He invites us to be certain about some beliefs, not because they have to be correct, but because otherwise our world would fall apart.

The doors will open at 7pm and the talk will start at 7:30pm.
