Event description

Description

We're delighted to announce a very special Philosophy in the Bookshop event with John Kaag, Professor and Chair of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. He'll be discussing his latest book, 'Hiking with Nietzsche' and the role of Autobiography within Philosophy.

John is the author of American Philosophy: A Love Story and Hiking with Nietzsche, A tale of two philosophical journeys - one made by Kaag as an introspective 19 year old, the second 17 years later in radically different circumstances: he is now a husband and father, and his wife and small child are in tow. Kaag sets off for the Swiss peaks above Sils Maria where Nietzsche wrote his landmark work 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'. Both of Kaag's journeys are made in search of the wisdom at the core of Nietzsche's philosophy, yet they deliver him to radically different interpretations and, more crucially, revelations about the human condition.. A fascinating exploration not only of Nietzsche's ideals but of how his experience of living relates to us as individuals in the 21st century.

We're thrilled to be welcoming John to Oxford as part of an extremely limited tour. John will be interviewing Derren Brown at the Barbican Theatre in London on the previous evening prior to joining us in Oxford.

This is a free event to attend and takes place in the Philosophy department (Please note that this area has limited access) Please arrive early if you would like a seat.
