Event description
Dame Katherine Grainger in conversation with Sandy Nairne discussing 'The Inspiration and Impact of Sport'

About this Event

Primrose Hill Lecture Series are delighted to announce we’ll be back this October/November with one of the best line-ups we’ve ever hosted, all delivered digitally with a live audience Q&A.

The Lecture Series will focus on raising money for St. Mary’s Church – a vital base for outreach services to vulnerable local people, including the elderly, the homeless, and young people.

Therefore, participants will be asked to make a modest contribution for admission. “It’s our way of making sure the lecture series stays alive, stays as accessible as possible to as many people as possible, and continues to do its job of raising vital money for the church and its local community”, says Giles Watkins, Chair of the Lecture Series.

The Lecture Series is one of the main sources of income for the church, and has been fundamental in helping St Mary’s provide its highly admired winter homeless shelter, tea rooms for the elderly and free base for ground-breaking outreach programmes such as services for vulnerable youth.

‘The Inspiration and Impact of Sport’.

Dame Katherine Grainger DBE is Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, winning one gold and four silver medals for rowing. She has been six-times World Champion. At the London Olympics in 2012, Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins rowed to gold in the women’s double sculls.

Katherine is currently Chair of UK Sport and a board member of International Inspiration, a charity that encourages sport for children from low and middle income families. She served as Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University between 2015 and 2020 and is now Chancellor of the University of Glasgow.

Katherine is an inspiration in motivation, teamwork, overcoming challenges, winning and the importance of communication.

In what would have been the year of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Katherine Grainger will be in conversation with Sandy Nairne, formerly the director of the National Portrait Gallery who rowed for Oxford University in the early 1970s.

Praise for Katherine Grainger – The Autobiography

“The book is a testament to friendship” (The Observer)

“… as much about people as it is about the physical and mental challenges of world-class rowing” (The Financial Times)

“a beautifully crafted tale of a singular woman… an important and long overdue book… its pages are rich with emotion; passion, anger and determination ooze out of the text.” (Rowing & Regatta Magazine)
