What is a City of Culture, and who is it for? What do local artists and residents want it to be, and (how) can it be influenced?

About this Event

A symposium exploring the discourse around UK City of Culture.

What is a City of Culture, and who is it for? What do local artists and residents want it to be, and (how) can it be influenced?

This event will bring together artists, writers, producers and curators from around the UK to discuss their experience of culture-led regeneration and mega-cultural events, from Liverpool to Hull, Folkestone to East London.

In December 2017 Coventry was announced as the third UK City of Culture, prompting local media to talk of a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to boost to the city’s economy. Media coverage for the previous UK City of Culture in Hull also focused on economic growth, increased civic pride and access to the arts, within an overarching “city from the ashes” narrative.

This event will attempt to go beyond the media narrative to explore the ideologies and realities of City of Culture, and what it can mean for Coventry.

Key themes will include arts-led regeneration, creative placemaking, and valuing vernacular cultures.

Confirmed contributors include:

Dr Cara Courage (Head, Tate Exchange)

Mike Stubbs (Artist and previous Director, FACT Liverpool)

Jo Cowdrey (Assistant Curator, Folkestone Triennial)

Verity Adriana (Photographer and Assistant Lecturer, Coventry University)

Joy White (Author “Urban Music and Entrepreneurship: Beats, Rhymes and Young People’s Enterprise”)

Additional contributors will be announced over the coming weeks.

The symposium forms the second part of the Phoenix City Convergence, which begins with a curated programme of artists’ film and video works at The Row (8 Ironmonger Row, CV1) on Friday 25th October. It is recommended to attend both the screening programme and symposium.

This event is presented by Duncan Whitley as a part of his Coventry Biennial Residency at Coventry University’s School of Media and Performing Arts.
