Join this workshop to develop your subject knowledge of the complex phonics code (phase 5) and gain new ideas to underpin your teaching of phonics for reading and writing.

For phonics teaching to be highly effective, practitioners must have secure subject knowledge and a clear understanding of phonological progression. This interactive online workshop will cover the relevant subject knowledge and progression for teaching the complex phonics code (phases 5-6), where children continue to build their knowledge of grapheme-phoneme correspondences, progressing into alternative representations and pronunciations. Included in the workshop will be games and activities to teach and practise concepts, as well as ideas for the application of phonics within discrete sessions and across the curriculum.

You will receive in advance all the handouts and resources for you to fully participate and, during the session, participation tools will be used such as practical activities, breakout groups for discussion and opportunities for questions throughout.

This session is suitable for EYFS/KS1 teachers, KS2 teachers delivering phonics, TAs supporting the teaching of phonics.

Participants will:

• Become familiar with the subject knowledge and terminology associated with teaching phonics

• Understand the progression in phonics teaching and children’s acquisition of the relevant knowledge and skills

• Explore practical games, activities and approaches for discrete phonics teaching and its application to reading and writing

As an experienced English consultant, Susie Spolander works with schools, partnerships and trusts to develop and improve all aspects of English across the primary age range. During her 20+ year career in Education, Susie has enjoyed classroom teaching, as well as holding a range of senior leadership posts. Prior to establishing her own consultancy business, she worked as an English Consultant for Oxfordshire County Council’s School Improvement Service. Susie has written, developed and led a wide variety of training events, programmes and projects to address current local and national educational priorities. She is also an accredited trainer for several reading intervention programmes. In recognition of her work, Susie has been awarded the Gold Quality Mark for Professional Development by the London Institute of Education.

Susie is passionate about finding innovative ways to inspire teachers and engage learners.
