Wed 26 October 2016, 18:30 – 20:30 BST
NEPN is pleased to welcome John Clang to Sunderland to speak about his photographic practice on Wednesday 26 October at 6.30pm at Pop Recs Ltd, 27 Grange Terrace (also called Stockton Road), Sunderland, SR2 7AQ.
The talk will start at 6.30pm prompt and will be followed by drinks and informal conversation until 8.30pm. The talk is free, however booking is requested.
John Clang is an artist working in photography and film. His fascination with time, displacement and existence influences his work. His works examine and raise questions about the world he lives in, providing not pictorial documentation but an intimate mental reflection of one man's mind.
Clang’s first exhibition, in 1993, was a duo-show at the controversial (now defunct) Singapore art group 5th Passage Artists. He has since participated in numerous solo & group exhibitions at Jendela Gallery, The Substation, 2902 Gallery, National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, FOST Gallery (Singapore), Pekin Fine Arts (China), Proud Galleries (UK), Annexe Gallery (Malaysia), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, KSU Art Museum, Sundaram Tagore Gallery (US), mc2Gallery, Center of Contemporary Culture Strozzina (Italy), DUTAC (UAE).
His work can be found in the permanent collections of Singapore Art Museum and National Museum of Singapore. In 2013, a showcase of over 90 works by Clang was exhibited at the National Museum of Singapore. To date, he is still the first and only photographer to receive the President’s Designer of the Year award, Singapore’s most prestigious design accolade.
He received his Master of Art Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London. Clang lives and works in New York and Singapore.
From 28 October – 9 December 2016, Clang will be exhibiting at Bonington Gallery, Nottingham in the group show Krísis.
