Event description

Description

From November 16th to 19th this year, Durham will once again welcome the Lumiere festival. For four nights, the city will light up, and become even more photogenic than usual. Are you prepared?

You may have a nice camera, some lenses, and a tripod, but do you know what it takes to capture light of all kinds and colours, bright and dim, moving and still? Let me take the guesswork out of it for you.

For a limited time, this night photography workshop will give you the skills and knowledge you need to take fabulous shots in the dark, and prepare you to get the best out of your camera when visiting Lumiere. We'll practice with a whole range of light sources already scattered around the city, as well as introducing some of our own - and other special effects, such as smoke.

We'll begin just after sunset, with a discussion of equipment, settings, and techniques, before heading into the centre of Durham to get plenty of practice.

This event is suitable for absolute beginners, but also for experienced photographers who have yet to take the step into manual mode. There'll be plenty of opportunities to practice, under expert supervision.

We'll meet in a location in Durham City Centre. You'll need to provide your own camera, ideally a DSLR or CSC, although bridge cameras are also suitable. Tripods are optional, but if you have one it'll enable you to get better shots.

Numbers are restricted to 10 photographers, so that you get plenty of individual support.

The workshop will go ahead with any number of participants, so the actual group size could be even smaller. That makes this event the perfect choice if you'd like more individual help than I'm able to provide in the larger group.

Please note that in order to keep prices down, bookings are non-refundable if you're unable to come (but it may possible to transfer it to someone else, upon request). In the event of adverse weather, the workshop will be postponed, and you will be offered suitable alternatives.

Joining instructions will be sent to everyone around two days before the event. This gives me time to take account of any special factors, such as weather for outdoor courses. Also, as you might appreciate, I don't want to make those details available to the general public.

Book early to secure your place.

(The Lumiere brand name is used under licence, with the kind permission of Artichoke).
