Photography Exhibit: A Place at the Table

This Women’s History Month, Hammersmith & Fulham Council are partnering with grassroots organisation Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW) and artist Camila Almeida to share a photography exhibit which highlights the often-hidden voices of those affected by domestic servitude.

Domestic Servitude is a form of Modern Slavery and Exploitation (MSE) which keeps people in forced labour and often inhumane conditions within private households. As it disproportionately affects women, it is also widely considered a form of Violence Against Women and Girls.

Approximately 20,000 Overseas Domestic Worker visas are issued every year allowing workers to accompany their employer to the UK and work exclusively in a private household. Unfortunately, this type of visa, coupled with specific immigration rules and other barriers, often facilitate the transition from domestic work to domestic servitude.

The Voice of Domestic Workers is a grass roots organisation made up of migrant domestic workers who campaign to raise awareness of this often-hidden issue and empower those affected.

The event and photography exhibit aim to highlight this issue, particularly in a local context to H&F, and recognise the resilience and strength of the women disproportionately impacted.

Photography Exhibit: Monday 17th March - Friday 4th April

The photography will be displayed at SCRUM Studios in Hammersmith for three weeks from Monday 17th March until Friday 4th April. The exhibit will be on display in the Mezzanine area and is open to the public during SCRUM Studios opening hours:

Monday to Friday, 9:30am-6:00pm

Event | Evening of conversation with the Artist and Activists: 25th March 5:30pm

Hammersmith & Fulham Council are hosting an evening event in conversation with the artist Camila Almeida and Director of grassroots organisation Voice of Domestic Workers, Marissa Begonia.

The event will include:

short talks about the photography project, the work of Voice of Domestic Workers, and the stories of local residents who have been impacted by Domestic Servitude
a Question & Answer session with the speakers
opportunity for informal conversation and community networking.

Refreshments will be provided.

Please note the exhibition is located on the first floor of the building and there is a set of stairs.

The event on the 25th will take place on the lower level and will be fully accessible (the photos will be shown in the venue space on this day as well).
