Event description

Description

Through Strong Island Media we have delivered photography workshops over the last 6 years to over two thousand people of all ages and abilities across the south coast. Working with Chichester Harbour Conservancy, University of Portsmouth, Making Space, Hampshire Cultural Trust plus many schools and youth groups. Over time we’ve developed 'Walkshops', where rather than sitting down in a classroom you actively learn different photography skills and techniques out and about with your camera, with support from a professional photographer.

We’ve delivered dozens and dozens of these Walkshops from Worthing through to Bournemouth and as far north as Surrey and from the summer of 2015 we have run a very successful series of summer walkshops in and around Southsea & Portsmouth. We’re blessed with a visually rich and diverse city, with harbours, beaches, woodland, wildlife and lots of heritage to explore through photography. This workshop involves a leisurely 2 hour walk with fun & creative photo activities allowing you to find out much more about your camera and how to get the best out from it in the future. We’ll be looking at composition, perspectives, textures, leading lines, creating narrative and also how to take control of aperture and shutter speed.

All you have to do is bring along your camera to take part. It can be anything from a digital compact through to an SLR and if you want to shoot 35mm film, cool! If you don’t have your own camera we have a selection of digital compacts you are free to borrow for the workshop (please let us know in advance). We can even offer 35mm SLRs for you to use if you like. Even if you just bring along your cameraphone you’ll learn loads that’ll make a big difference to your mobile photography.

Walkshops are 2 hours long and cost £10 either paid either in advance online with PayPal or in person at the start of the workshop (please book online for both). Group size is limited to 15 per workshop. All ages welcome, if under 16 please be accompanied by an adult.

We'll be starting off the photography walkshop in historic Emsworth on the famous South Street that runs down past old fishing cottages to the shore of Chichester Harbour. We'll explore the outer edge of the Mill Pond, looking over the wide views over the water and looking for interesting landmarks and sights. At Emsworth Sailing Club we'll go out on to the shoreline before making our way back around the other side of the pond, exploring the boat yards, etc. along the way. We'll end back at the Blue Bell Inn, a great spot for a drink or food after the walk.

Expect to see a busy small town, lots of boats and yachts, great landscape views, beach finds on the shoreline, textures on the boats in the yards and much more.

Meet at:

Outside the Blue Bell Inn. Parking is available in the main carpark behind the Blue Bell (pay & display), also on the road where available (limited duration). Do not park on the shoreline at the bottom of South Street as the tide may be on the way in. There is a main bus stop at the top of South Street at St. Peter's Square. There is Emsworth train station about 5-10 minutes walk away.

Notes:

This walk is about 90% wheelchair accessible, although we may go down on to a pontoon, which might be a little steep. The path around much of the route is solid. At two points we may move on to the shore, which may be wet and uneven.
