Event description

Description

Through Strong Island Media we have delivered photography workshops over the last 7 years to over two thousand people of all ages and abilities across the south coast. Working with organisations such as Chichester Harbour Conservancy, University of Portsmouth, Making Space, Hampshire Cultural Trust plus many schools and youth groups we’ve developed Walkshops, where rather than sitting down in a classroom you actively learn different photography skills and techniques out and about with your camera, with support from a professional photographer.

A Strong Island photo walkshop involve a leisurely 2 hour walk with fun & creative photo activities allowing you to find out much more about your camera and how to get the best out from it in the future. We’ll be looking at composition, perspectives, textures, leading lines, creating narrative and also how to take control of aperture and shutter speed plus much more. A walkshop is for all ages & abilities, and is a great way to enjoy time with fellow photographers.

All you have to do is bring along your camera to take part. It can be anything from a cameraphone to a digital compact through to an SLR and if you want to shoot 35mm film, cool! If you don’t have your own camera we have a selection of digital compacts you are free to borrow for the workshop. We can even offer 35mm SLRs for you to use if you like. Even if you just bring along your cameraphone you’ll learn loads that’ll make a big difference to your mobile photography.

Walkshops are 2 hours long and cost £10 either in advance (booked online) or in person at the start of the workshop. Group size is limited to 15 per workshop. All ages welcome (if under 16, please be accompanied by an adult).

Please arrive 15 minutes early.

For this Southsea walkshop we will be focusing on shooting in monochrome and what makes it different from colour photography. The strong spring sunlight (hopefully!) and the shadows it creates came be perfect for black and white images. We'll begin setting our cameras up in monochrome and start exploring the Rose Gardens and the remains of the old fort. We will then visit the beach before walking down to Canoe Lake. We will then head back down to the shelters on the Prom and back on the beach before ending up at South Parade Pier. Expect to see a great mix of subjects, textures, shadows and tones.

Unlike other walks, we're not worried about lots of wind and rain for this one...if anything they can help create some dramatic and atmospheric images for this walk. So this walkshop will go ahead no matter the weather conditions. Most cameras are not weather sealed or waterproof so it is worth considering buying an in-expensive rain cover for your camera in advance. There are lots on Amazon for all camera types and are pretty cheap and always handy to have around in your camera bag just in case.

Please wear some waterproof gear if you have it, a warm coat, etc are also recommended but it depends on the weather on the day.

Meet at:

The entrance gate for The Rose Gardens, facing the seafront. Parking is available at the Canoe Lake carpark (paid) or along the seafront (paid, but seasonal). The closest bus stops are at the westerly end of Canoe Lake. The nearest train station is Fratton, about 25 minutes walk away.

Notes:

About 50% of the walkshop is wheelchair friendly with paths and roads, but with some parts going down on to the shore/beach, although participation is still possible from the prom for the most part.
