Event description

Description

Take control of your camera with award winning photojournalist Paul Glendell

Spend the day learning how to take full control of your camera and be more creative in your picture taking. This workshop will show you how to use the manual controls and by the end of the day you will be fully conversant with the aperture, shutter, speed and ISO settings on your camera. We will look at composition, such as the rule of thirds and using ‘lines’ through your photos to add more impact. You will learn how and why they work. I will explain how to produce a narrow depth of field so that the subject is in focus and the background is out of focus. With a maximum of six participants I will be able to spend time with each person individually and help you with any issues you have during the practical sessions

Lunch is provided by the wonderful Crathes Café as part of the cost.

How the Workshop will Run

The first half of the morning we will be in the classroom learning about the manual controls. There will be practical sessions in the classroom as part of this. After coffee the subject will be composition and how to use those controls you have learned to get the best photo.

Following a lunch break we will spend the first part of the afternoon outside in the grounds of National Trust for Scotland’s wonderful Crathes Castle putting into practice the new techniques and I will work with each individual in turn as you take photos. Then its back inside for tea/coffee to look at the photos and find out where we have all got it right and where improvements can still be made.

What you will need

A camera that will permit full manual control is required to get the most from this course. Such as a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. As long as your camera has some way of permitting control of aperture, shutter speed and ISO then it will be fine. A tripod would be useful and if you have your camera's instruction manual please bring it along.

Feedback from Previous Workshops

"I attended a photography course with Paul at Crathes castle. The course was carried out at a good pace so all understood the lesson at all times. The setting and facilities were first class especially for the outside practical. I can now move away from the"auto"setting with a lot more confidence. Many thanks. I can thoroughly recommend this course with Paul"

Gordon Cruickshank

"Having the chance to speak with a hugely experienced and imaginative photographer like Paul, and to review the planning and execution of our photos was incredibly beneficial.... Paul worked wonders with me and continued to help even some days after the class. I loved the course and have already booked myself on to his "full set" of courses in Aberdeenshire this summer!"

Mike Scotting - geologist and polar cruise guide."

Just to say formally how much I appreciated your two workshops. While I think I'd encountered most of what you talked about in theory, you really brought it all alive and gave it meaning. Despite 65 years (heck, is it that long?) using a camera I found your two sessions incredibly useful."

Dick Morris

"I really enjoyed the workshop in Glen Finglas last week. The balance of classroom theory and practical use of the camera was just right and I found that, at last, I was beginning to understand what I was trying to do with the camera. From composition of landscape shots to techniques that made the subject really stand out in close up, it was a thoroughly illuminating experience! The location was superb as was the lunch you laid on! Many thanks again for a really enjoyable day which has taken me off auto and onto Manual for good!"
