Event description

Description

A practical, hands-on workshop looking at how to improve your photographs of people and places without relying on expensive equipment.

The session will look at all aspects of a reportage / location photo-shoot: making the most of shooting real people in real life scenarios. From planning as many aspects as possible, such as equipment, location, timing a shoot, lighting etc. through to shooting, editing and storing a final set of images.

Focus will be placed on:
Tips for interior and exterior portraiture
How to make the best of available light
What to pack in your camera bag
Improving composition
Answering student queries

Students should bring along whatever camera they intend to use when in the field. A laptop or tablet may also be useful.

Trainer: Paul Cochrane

My photography is very much focussed on people and their relationship to their environment. Like most of us, I am fascinated by my fellow humans! I try to capture the everyday in as engaging a way as possible. Often shooting on-location, I enjoy having to respond to changing environments and conditions; trying to get the best out of a subject within a limited window of opportunity is both testing and rewarding in equal measure.

A degree in Fine Art inspired my interest in Photography, developing it primarily into a fascination with the mechanics of cameras and optics and also the ritualistic processes around analogue photography. This led to me building cameras out of everyday objects from a chest of drawers to Pringles crisp packets. This is also where I discovered the key role the Photographer plays in instilling trust in their subject and how important it is to involve the sitter in the process.
