The October (2nd ever) meetup for PHP Surrey, a new community driven PHP user group in the heart of Surrey with monthly talks from a huge range of speakers.
For our first meetup we are welcoming Chris Hoult & Michael Cullum as our speakers.
Ethical Engineering (Chris Hoult) - 40 minutes
Our increasingly connected world, along with the promises of Big Data and Cloud Computing, offers us multitudes of opportunities to model the world and build powerful technology to improve not only the companies we work for but the lives of many. Yet far too often we, as engineers, focus on providing a solution to the problem at hand and overlook the problems that the solution itself might cause. In this talk, Christopher examines some of the issues our world throws up, and asks what it takes to engineer ethically.
Stepping into PHP 7 in 20 minutes (Michael Cullum) - 20 minutes
This time next month, PHP 7 will be landing on our doorsteps but not many people know of it's main new features and even fewer have started preparing applications to be compatible. My main aim is to wet your appetite to learn more about PHP with a brief overview of what does PHP 7 actually has to offer, why should you bother updating to PHP 7 and a little bit of history as to why it's not called PHP 6.
A 23-year American transplant to the UK, Christopher is an Engineering Team Lead at DataSift, overseeing the web application, public API and a number of internal services at the world’s leading processor of human data. Prior to this, he was a Senior Engineer at Time Out Digital, helping to design and deliver their global platform as well as the day to day running of the Time Out London and Paris websites.
Michael Cullum is a backend PHP developer, working particularly with Symfony, and has been for about nine years. He is an official team member and member of the management team at phpBB where he has been a contributor for over half a decade and more recently he founded the new PHP Surrey User Group. Michael is passionate about open source software and is an advocate of modern development principles & methods, open source project co-operation, and the active development of standards through the PHP FIG.
