Event description

Description

Most of us are aware of the statistic that people with SMI have a 15-20 year reduced life expectancy, much of this related to physical ill health. This relates to lifestyle, medication and other factors, mainly around cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.

Some examples of the statistics:

  • a reduced life expectancy of 15-20 years
  • three times the likelihood of being a smoker or having high blood pressure
  • double the risk of obesity and diabetes
  • five times the risk of lipid imbalance
  • the result is more than 40,000 potentially avoidable deaths each year in this group of people

In Kingston we want to be ambitious and eliminate this inequality by delivering first class physical health care for everyone, including those of us living with SMI.

The starting place is some training – this training will be mandatory for those practices who will be participating in the revised mental health and early intervention KPI about to be published.

As that starting place, we are asking for one person per practice to attend some training in the morning of 24th January before the educational half day.

  • It will be at the Hotel Antoinette, the same venue as the half day.
  • We will provide 2 x 1½-hour sessions for you to select from, with coffee and tea refreshments.
  • There will be a limit of 15 people per session and this can be one GP or nurse from each practice. One of the conditions for attendance is for them to disseminate their learning across the practice.

Delivering the training will be Kate Dale, a nurse from Bradford who has developed the Bradford template – which is available already on the EMIS system – I attach a document that tells you where to find it and another very brief report about it. Kate will be especially helping us to understand why this is work that is so important for patients and for our health economy.

So, please would you release one of your nurses or GPs for an hour and a half that morning to do this training. There will an abbreviated form of this in a couple of the sessions in the afternoon half day so that other staff can get a taster too.

To help with releasing people, we will contribute £150 payable to each practice to help with releasing them for the hour and a half and to disseminate the learning across the practice. Please consider who is the most appropriate person from your practice to attend this training.
