Description

An evening with Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE FRS and Reverend Faez Jirjees, St George’s Baghdad

Ticket cost includes refreshments, canapés, with music provided by Tobias Ben Jacob of www.jacobanddrinkwater.com

PROFESSOR JIM (JAMEEL) AL-KHALILI OBE FRS

His most recent lecture on 30th July 2019 was attended by over 800 physicists as part of the International Nuclear Physics Conference in Glasgow, UK. So, we are absolutely delighted to announce that this well-known scientist has agreed to speak at our fundraising event.

Given his moniker the “Affable Egghead” (Sunday Times), maybe we should not have been entirely surprised. Professor Jim is a renowned theoretical physicist. Born in Baghdad in 1962 to an Iraqi father and English mother, the family settled in the UK in 1979 where he continued his education. After gaining a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1986, he went on to gain a PhD in nuclear reaction theory in 1989 from the University of Surrey and has gone on to publish over 100 papers in academic scientific journals. Jim is also a prominent author and broadcaster. He has written 13 books, between them translated into over twenty-five languages, including Arabic. This year saw the publication of his first novel, a science fiction thriller called Sunfall, signed copies of which will be available to purchase at this event.

Also known as the “Cuddly Atheist”, we are thrilled to have the support of Professor Jim for this event, supporting the peace-building work of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East www.frrme.org.

THE REVEREND FAEZ JIRJEES, ST GEORGE’S BAGHDAD

On October 25th 2009, suicide bombers killed 150 people on the streets outside St George’s Church in Baghdad, injuring 600 more. Faez Jirjees remembers this attack well. Despite continuous threats of violence in the city, he pursued his true calling and is now the only ordained Anglican vicar in the whole of Iraq, as well as being Chaplain at St George’s.

This fellow countryman of Professor Jim leads a church under siege. At the same time, Faez has been recognised by the Iraqi and British governments for his extraordinary reconciliation and humanitarian work. A few months ago, the Prime Minister of Iraq, Adil Abdul-Mahdi, paid St George’s a visit. Flanked by his security team, the Prime Minister looked around the church, the primary school and the medical clinic (which treats people of all faiths). Mr Abdul-Mahdi remarked: “I am dazzled at what you have achieved; there is nothing else like this in Iraq.”

We are delighted to bring together two such outstanding people with two takes on the future. We look forward to welcoming you to our Physics & Faith event.
