Event description

Description

FREE annual event ORGANISED AND PROMOTED PRIVATELY, combining fun and satisfaction with a smidgen of work, at stunning Whitepark Bay on the North Antrim Coast.

WHAT DO WE DO? Us volunteers typically give an hour of our time to help with weed clearing. Good deed done, we're at the coast and perfectly placed for a picnic. We are very pleased to note that our work in 2017 & 2018 is already starting to make a difference.

"It was actually almost therapeutic" - Deirdre from Portstewart

NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED
NO TOOLS NEEDED
SUPERVISED KIDS & DOGS WELCOME

SAT. 29 JUNE 2019 is the date we've chosen - the first day of the main summer holiday. Although it's a FREE event, can you please REGISTER. We'll PROVISIONALLY RESERVE a parking place for you and your bicycle, bike, car or mini-bus. This helps us manage the limited parking and also prepare for the day. We'll send a reminder nearer to the event, when you can change the numbers or cancel if your plans have changed and you can no longer join us.

Our target for 2019 is a massive and very challenging 1000+ VOLUNTEERS giving just an hour or so. An hour will burn up more than a few calories!!! The more who help, the more land we can clear. Some invasive plant species have such a hold on the area that without this level of support, it may be necessary to resort to a chemical solution. Cutting is not an option and the traditional pulling by hand is a much-preferred strategy.

"Hard work in the sun, but very enjoyable. Followed up with picnic and then played on beach. Definitely be back next year." Ballymoney Scouts

The event itself must be and is run by the National Trust as they are site custodians and have responsibility for Health & Safety. Head Ranger Dr Cliff Henry & Team regularly manage the land.

We know all species have their place in nature but some must be kept in check so others have a chance to survive. Team Henry's dedicated and on-going work is now becoming more evident. The likes of blackthorn have been brought to a level that gives opportunities for other species, including several orchids, and bluebells are once again able to put on their spring show.

We'll be adding more info before and after the event on the Facebook page Picnic & Pulling. Please could you LIKE the page. Also, please can you SHARE the page?
