Event description

Description

Southwark Cathedral is delighted to host this day consisting of four talks about different aspects of pilgrimage.

Brian Mooney: Via Francigena: Pilgrimage before Ryanair - On Foot to Rome and Back.

Brian Mooney is a prize-winning international journalist and the author of six books, including two which recount his walks to Rome and back – A Long Way for a Pizza (2012) and The Wrong Way for a Pizza (2013). He has also walked to Spain and back along both the Camino Francés and the Camino del Norte , and has crossed France on foot six times and Britain three times. He is Chairman of the Confraternity of Pilgrims to Rome, a Councilman of the City of London Corporation, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Neil Tryner: Boccadillo, Blisters and Baggage.

Neil is a lifelong non walker who decided to walk a pilgrim way while between jobs and moving to London from Birmingham, as a time filler. After walking hundreds of kilometres, leaving toiletries and moisturisers behind as they no longer mattered, sleeping in dorms for the first time in years, meeting mind blowing people and crying a few tears he came back to normal life with an altered view of the world and his part in it.

Leigh Hatts: Following Becket from Southwark to Canterbury.

Leigh Hatts, author of Walking The Pilgrims’ Way, (2017) has also written Walking The Thames Path, The Lea Valley Walk and London’s 100 Best Churches. His talk will feature the ancient pilgrim route from London to Canterbury.
