Event Details

Two sessions: Tuesday 18 June, 7–9pm and Tuesday 25 June, 7–9pm

Create and glaze pinch pots over two workshop sessions with studio artist Olivia Jones.

Pinch pots are a simple form of hand-made pottery created by pressing your thumb into a ball of clay and working the clay outwards into a pot or vessel. Olivia Jones recently used pinch pots to test variations in volcanic glazes during a residency with the University of Bristol.

In this workshop, create your own pinch pots and design patterns for glazing with premixed stoneware glazes and volcanic ash glazes created by the artist.

The workshop is split into two sessions to allow for a first firing between creating the pots and applying the glazes. All materials are provided and participants can collect their creations after the final firing.

Olivia Jones took residence as University of Bristol’s EarthArt Fellow from July 2018 to January 2019. During her fellowship, Jones worked with academics in the Volcanology Research Group on the subject of volcanic ash, building on a project she began developing in late 2017 titled, Tephra: Order in the Dust.

Exploring the behaviour and materiality of ash particles, clouds and plumes, Jones has created a new body of work in conversation with Bristol volcanologists, looking into the methodologies, technologies and interface between science and art.
