Event description

Description

A fun, flexible, social opportunity for people of all abilities to play table tennis

Open to players of all standards and ages from 11+ (under 11s at the discretion of the organisers).

Play will be in groups of 5 players of a similar standard. Each player plays the others in their group, three games up to 11, no deuces.

“Every point counts!” Final positions in the group, and at the end of the six weeks, will be determined by total points won, not sets. Points difference will be used in the event of a tie

Group winners on the night will receive medals and certificates, and small prizes will be awarded e.g. “best performance on the night”. There will be a trophy and additional prizes for performances across the whole six weeks.

Play is between 7.15 and 9.15 pm. Register in advance any time from now on. Registration must be received by 1 pm on the date of the fixture you are playing.

The competition is run by the Oxford and District Table Tennis Association (ODTTA) with support from Table Tennis England and Oxford City Council Ping! Oxford. An organiser with DBS clearance will be in overall charge on the night, and there will be at least one person present with up-to-date first aid training.

The organisers reserve the right to change the format to accommodate the number of entries each week, to ensure all players get a good level of play and all play the same number of games.

FAQs

Is there parking?

The school has plenty of bike racks and free parking spaces. Several buses stop nearby.

Can I just turn up and play on the day?

You must register to play by 1 pm on the date of each fixture. Anyone unable to register online should contact the organiser by email, text or voicemail, stating their level of play and bring cash to pay on the door.

The flexible format means you don't have to play every week, you can dip in and out as much as you like.

What group will I be in?

The organisers will place players in the appropriate group for their level of play, based on the information available (including previous results and/or league form). Groups are likely to change each week, depending on previous results and who else is present.

I don't have my own bat, is equipment provided?

Yes, we provide bats and balls. But you can bring your own bat if you prefer.

Does it matter what I wear?

Whatever you want - but avoid wearing white tops as this makes the ball hard to see, and wear appropriate shoes for exercise.

Does it matter if I can't serve properly?

Players in the higher level groups should follow normal service rules as far as possible. Service rules in the lower level groups will be more relaxed to accommodate inexperienced and social players, but we will help you to learn how to serve properly.

I'm a beginner, is this competition for me?

As long as you can knock the ball over the net, you can give it a go, as you will be in a group with players of a similar level. Why not come with a friend of a similar level, and see who gets most points over the series?

I'm a pretty good player, is this competition for me?

Yes, we'll put you in a group with players of a similar standard. Why not bring your fellow players along to make certain of competitive games? You can compete among yourselves to see who gets most points over the series. The top group(s) will play on good ITTF standard table and you can use your own 3* ball
