Join us as Dr Gemma Bowsher explores how health professionals, scientists, and policymakers confront the challenge of biological threats in war zones. From chemical weapons to infectious disease outbreaks, biothreats present unique dangers in already chaotic environments. This talk unpacks the science, strategy, and global cooperation needed to tackle these threats — and asks what the future holds for health security in conflict.
Dr Gemma Bowsher leads on global health security at the Centre for Conflict and Health Research. She is also an associate member of the Centre for Science and Security Studies, and the Global Oncology Group. A social scientist and medical doctor by background, her work focuses on the interface of global health security and conflict, with a particular interest in preparedness and response to biological and chemical emergencies, and the public health dimensions of conflict.
Gemma holds a medical degree from King’s College London and a Masters degree in Medical Anthropology from Harvard University. Her doctoral study at King’s examines global health security in Ukraine. Gemma holds a range of fellowships including Fellowship of the Royal Society of Public Health and The Royal Geographical Society. She also holds visiting appointments at the Intellectual Forum of Jesus College, Cambridge and The American University of Iraq.
