A lively, entertaining workshop that demystifies the process of raising money for creative enterprises of all kinds – taking the fear out of ‘the pitch’.
What’s your Big Idea? Most of us have visions, goals and dreams for ourselves: I want to write a book; I want to start my own creative business; I want to expand my existing company; I want to make a film or write a novel; I want to provide a service; I want to partner with a friend to fill a gap in the design market…and many more.
What’s stopping us? The usual answer is money – unless we’re independently wealthy we need some backing to make these dreams a reality. The widely held belief is that raising finance is hugely difficult for creative people, that in fact they are not ‘able’ to sell their ideas and convince others to invest…in short, visionaries can’t PITCH. Hence the rise and rise of agents, middlemen, managers and others who pat you on the hand and say ‘they’ll take care of it’, which also means they’ll take a big chunk of your profits. Art and money don’t mix; salesmen are born not made, right? Wrong. If you have a Big Idea and are willing to leave your preconceptions at the door, you will discover that anyone can pitch. No matter what your project, your personality type or your experience, this course will show you that you have what it takes to bridge the gap between the creative and commercial.
What’s Included: Simple tools will aid you with preparation and information-gathering, while insights and case studies will illustrate the do’s and don’ts of successful creative selling, from the formal presentation to an informal approach, and to the writing of an effective sales letter. Volunteers from the group will be guided through one to one practice pitches, and exercises will build confidence as you apply the pitching tools.
Course requirements: This course is aimed at artists, writers, creative entrepreneurs of all kinds, embracing beginners and experienced professionals seeking to build their selling muscles; individuals as well as partners with a shared vision are very welcome. It is highly recommended for anyone who has ever said, ‘If only I could find the money to…’ and for those who think they are just genetically or culturally indisposed to selling.
