About this Event

Workshop Overview:

A series of five online workshops has been organised under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Engineering-funded project PIVOT- Re-visioning Peripheral Geographies: Strategies for Resilient Urban Development in the Global South project. Led by Dr Lakshmi Priya Rajendran from Anglia Ruskin University, the interdisciplinary multilateral collaborative project involves partners from UK (University of Nottingham, University of Reading, Cardiff University), India (IIT Roorkee, Hindustan Institute of Sciences and Technology), Mexico (UNAM), Turkey (Istanbul Technical University), South Africa (University of Cape Town) and Nigeria (University of Nigeria).

Focusing on the Nigerian context, the first workshop of PIVOT engages with the multi-dimensional and complex nature of the peri-urban regions in Nigeria. The workshop presentations will explore/examine four groups of interrelated challenges in the peri-urban planning and development:

-Climate and Environmental challenges e.g. flooding, urban heat island, impact on micro and macro climate, etc

-Social Challenges e.g. right to the city, social justice, identity and belonging

-Well-being challenges e.g. lack of green parks, reduced outdoor physical activity, environmental inequity, psychological impacts

-Economic challenges e.g lack of job opportunities, economic disparities
