SYNOPSIS

To celebrate the life of Jane Austen who was born on 16 December 1775 in Hampshire, died on 18 July 1817 in Winchester, Hampshire and is remembered on all our British £10 notes

At the time of Jane Austen, in 1793, yellow fever was ravaging through the colonies (and Spain). This talk looks at how a Pandemic might have impacted Jane and her characters and how Information Technology have changed their stories.

For example, if Sir Thomas Bertram brought the virus home from his plantations in the West Indies, perhaps through some stray mosquitoes in his luggage or a freak mutation that enabled it to be transmitted between primates, what technology might Fanny etc. have used to deal with it? She would certainly be concerned about visiting her family, and would insist on using Zoom to stay in touch with them and used delivery bots and remote controlled drones to deliver food to the needy.

As the disease spread to the Bennets, all contact with officers and other young men would cease, being replaced by AI avatar Balls. Mrs Bennet would still be using Linkedin of course.

(In the 18th and 19th centuries, yellow fever was seen as one of the most dangerous infectious diseases. Rather like Covid is today. )
