Event description

Description

Do you have a yearning to write a gothic novel? Or have you wondered whether you could? Are you fascinated by psychological drama, the supernatural, ghosts, vampires and creatures of the night?

Join me for a Halloween weekend of gothic fun and exploration, and get your gothic novel off the ground. We will use examples of classic gothic fiction to explore the structure of the gothic novel.

During this two day course you will learn:

What is gothic?

Definitions and origin of gothic fiction

Gothic genres: classic gothic, modern gothic, gothic romance, horror, tropical gothic, gothic thrillers, American gothic, etc.

Defining the gothic world.

Defining a gothic concept

What are the kinds of questions gothic novels ask? What are the inner demons and antagonistic forces that the gothic hero wrestles with?

Finding your gothic theme

What kinds of overarching themes/ questions of life does gothic fiction tend to focus on?

Gothic characterisation

What makes a gothic character - motivations, drives, personality.

Arguably no form of literature has more emphasis on exploring inner demons than the gothic genre.

Gothic antagonists

Will your characters be pitted in an epic struggle against their own inner demons or some monstrous external force determined to destroy them? Or, for full gothic impact, both.

Plotting the bones of a gothic story

Get your story structure right so that all you need do is fill in the blanks to complete your novel.

By the end of the weekend you should have:

  • An understanding of the gothic genre
  • A concept and theme for your own gothic novel
  • A cast of gothic characters
  • An outline for your novel

Get ready for NaNoWriMo

This workshop is being run on the weekend before the start of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). By the end of the course, you will have a structure for a book that will make it possible for you to write your 50 000 word novel in November.

Additional Support and Information

A Facebook group will be set up for people on this course. It will be a place where we can support each other on our writing journey, whether you decide to take part in NaNoWriMo or not.

The number of course places is limited to ensure everybody gets an opportunity to share their creative ideas with the group.

Familiarity with the genre will be a help. If you aren’t already an avid gothic fan it will help to read a few classics to get yourself into the zone. A recommended reading list will be sent to everyone who registers.
