Planetary Dialogue: Co-Mapping the AI Supply Chain Impact Framework

Join us for the first Planetary Dialogue! The Planetary Dialogues are an informal and evolving space within the AI + Planetary Justice (AIPJ) Alliance, created to foster open, unstructured conversations about the socio-environmental implications of AI.

After an introduction and presentation of the AIPJ Alliance and its team, the event will invite participants to test, challenge, and expand the framework through a participatory, co-creative process. The session aims to engage the audience in a live, structured exercise to identify missing impact areas, refine the framework’s dimensions, and propose alternative ways to assess AI’s real-world footprint. The goal is to foster bottom-up, collective knowledge production, ensuring the framework remains adaptive, critical, and reflective of diverse perspectives.

The AIPJ Impact Framework is designed to map the questions we may want to ask to assess the environmental, social, and political impacts of AI systems across their entire lifecycle–from raw material extraction, through manufacturing, model training and deployment, all the way to disposal. We aim to make visible the material and extractive dimensions of AI production that are often hidden in mainstream responsible AI discourse.

This tool is both a mapping and accountability instrument. It is built to help researchers, policymakers, civil society, and affected communities interrogate the AI industry’s practices, demand accountability, and push for systemic change. By identifying what we know and what we do not know–and by highlighting key data and information gaps—the framework challenges us to ask the critical questions: What materials go into AI systems, and at what cost? Who extracts, processes, and assembles AI hardware, and under what conditions? How do these processes impact local communities and ecosystems? And what happens to AI infrastructure when it is no longer in use?

We want to emphasize that this framework is a work in progress–a living, collaborative document that will evolve as new data, research, and community insights emerge. Many aspects of the AI supply chain remain unmeasured or partially disclosed, often due to corporate secrecy or inconsistent reporting. As such, our tool not only maps indicators of AI’s environmental and social footprint but–maybe most importantly–highlights the questions we still lack sufficient data to answer.

We invite you to join us in this effort. Your feedback is essential to refining this tool and advancing more accountable, sustainable practices in the AI industry.

To prepare for the Planetary Dialogue, we invite you to download and read the AI Supply Chain Impact Framework, thinking about which comments, ideas, and/or questions you might have.

About the AI + Planetary Justice Alliance

The AI + Planetary Justice Alliance is a global collective of researchers, activists, and artists, working to address the socio-environmental impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) across its entire lifecycle. From the extraction of raw materials to the disposal of AI systems, we follow the AI supply chain to uncover hidden injustices and drive actionable change.
