Event description

Description

Squarespace, Wix, or something else? My answer is probably something else and at this relaxed workshop for small creative businesses, you'll find out why.

An effective website is crucial to the growth and long term success of any small business, but it's almost impossible to know where to start. In Planning a Website for Small Creative Businesses, we'll take you through what your small business website needs to do, and how to make sure you pick the right platform.

We’ll help you understand what content you need to prepare and give you a heads up on what is really involved in creating a website that truly smashes it.

This includes:

  • Creating a brief for your own website

  • Rental vs owned website solutions

  • Summaries of Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and WordPress

  • The real cost of a website platform

  • Ongoing website management

  • Biggest mistakes most small businesses make

  • The quickest way to launch your own site, and it still be pretty pretty darn good

Planning a Website for Small Creative Businesses workshop will run from 6:30 - 8:30pm, followed by a dedicated 30 minutes Q&A and chit chat time.

What you'll get out of this Studio Cotton workshop

We'll take you through a website briefing checklist, so you understand what the essential website basics are, and most importantly, why. By investing a few hours on understanding the basics of website planning at this workshop, you'll avoid bad website decisions, saving a tonne of money, time and effort in the future!

We'll use worksheets, as well as simple single and group exercises, to get you thinking about immediate choices and changes you can make to improve your business. At the end of the workshop, you should feel more confident about your upcoming website project. You can also take away any resources and worksheets used during the session.

Who's this workshop for?

This workshop has been developed for any freelance creative, maker, seller or small business owner. From artists and illustrators to jewellers, yoga teachers to florists and shopkeepers to anything outside or in between. It's perfect for creatives looking to invest in a new website project, especially if you’re planning to use a DIY solution like Squarespace, Wix, Shopify or WordPress. It might also suit creatives with existing sites who are concerned that their current website isn't up to scratch, or are considering a change of direction.

If you’re planning to work with a professional website designer, this workshop will help you understand how to brief them effectively to get the most out of the best website platform.

Workshop FAQs

Refreshments
You can enjoy a small selection of teas, coffee, cold drinks and cake during the workshop. If you have any dietary requirements, please get in touch before booking to make sure these can be accommodated.

About the venue
Studio Cotton is the home of a dedicated space for creative business workshops. This intimate studio seats up to 20, but we like to keep our workshops to a more intimate 5 - 12 to ensure each participant feels comfortable and able to share, ask and learn.

Our venue is a bit of a Bristol secret. Nestled away in the heart of the Old City, you can find our front door tucked away on Exchange Avenue, nextdoor to St Nicks Market, opposite Eatchu and above Trailfinders Travel Agents.

Accessibility
Studio Cotton is located on the third floor of a listed building, and unfortunately the building’s elevator travels to the second floor. For this reason, there is no step-free access available.

Transport
Studio Cotton is located in the centre of Bristol and served by most public transport routes. Parking on the other hand is a little trickier. There is limited Pay & Display parking available on Corn Street and St Nicholas Street.

The closest multi-story car parks are Queen Charlotte Street, Nelson Street and The Galleries Shopping Centre, at the time of writing The Galleries Shopping Centre offers affordable parking after 5pm Monday to Saturday and all-day on Sundays - but do check this before you make your journey.

Contacting the Host
If you have any questions about the workshop or venue, you can contact Studio Cotton by email using hello@studiocotton.co.uk. We aim to reply to your message within 2 working days.

Cancellations & Refunds
Refunds are available up to 7 days before the event start time. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone this workshop, if this happens all purchasers will receive a full refund of their ticket price.

Other events at Studio Cotton
We run 8 expert-led, curated workshops which are repeated three times a year in a Spring, Summer and Autumn series. These are complemented with Walkthroughs to showcase how to use key apps mentioned in the workshops, such as MailChimp, Later and Eventbrite. There are also more casual meet ups like the Studio Cotton Clinics and Studio Cotton Photomeets if you’d like a more relaxed, chit chat vibe.
