The Urban Retrofit research project at the University of Glasgow invites you to attend a public lecture and discussion exploring Professor Yvonne Rydin’s new book “Planning without Growth”.
As Chair of Planning, Environment and Public Policy at University College London, Prof. Rydin has a long-standing interest in the potential of planning in low-growth and post-growth contexts and is interested in how these ideas translate into alternative models of the local economy. Her lecture will focus on the new book “Planning without Growth” which Professor Rydin published with Policy Press in 2025.
“Planning without Growth” critically explores how planning systems are locked into growth dependence and encourage market-led development that widens social inequality and adverse environmental outcomes. It challenges readers to think about what a ‘post-growth’ future might look like and how planning systems might be reformed and realigned to support low-growth.
Prof Rydin’s talk will be followed by a panel discussion, chaired by Prof Andy Inch from the University Glasgow, with Sarah Shaw, Chief Planner at Glasgow City Council, Stephen Jones, Director of Core Cities UK, and Clare Symonds from Planning Democracy, a community-led advocacy organisation that champions just planning outcomes. A drinks reception hosted by Urban Retrofit will follow the lecture and panel discussion.
